Why this year matters: The data we’ve collected is sobering. With several species facing rapid declines and the ‘akikiki reaching functional extinction in the wild, the stakes have never been higher. However, 2025 was also a year of historic breakthroughs:
• Innovative Science: From bi-weekly helicopter releases for mosquito suppression (IIT) to using Machine Learning to track bird calls, we are deploying every tool available to save our honeycreepers.
• Cultural Connection: Our work is grounded in “E kūʻē i ka make loa” (Resist Extinction). We highlight how we collaborate with local cultural practitioners and how we raise awareness about bird conservation on Kaua’i with community art.
• Ways to Help: Learn about our “Resist Extinction” T-shirt campaign and see our updated wishlist for the 2026 field season.
As we look toward 2026, we invite you to dive into these stories of hope, innovation, and community action. Our work is only possible because of supporters like you who refuse to let these voices go silent.
Mahalo for standing with us and for loving our forest birds,
The Kauaʻi Forest Bird Recovery Project Team
